History of Ecuador

The chronological account of Ecuador’s past, from ancient Andean societies through Spanish rule and independence to the modern republic.

Valdivia culture: An ancient coastal culture of present-day Ecuador, known for early pottery and settled village life. Its archaeological record anchors Ecuador’s history before the Inca and Spanish periods.
Gran Colombia: A republic founded in 1819 that united much of northern South America until its dissolution in 1831. Ecuador first became an independent republic after separating from this short-lived union.
Atahualpa: The last Inca emperor, captured and executed by Spanish forces in 1533. His capture marked the collapse of Inca resistance in the northern Andes.
Royal Audience of Quito: A Spanish colonial administrative and judicial jurisdiction centered on Quito, established in the sixteenth century. It provides the institutional framework for Ecuador’s colonial period.
Treaty of Guayaquil: The 1829 treaty between Gran Colombia and Peru that addressed their territorial dispute after war. Its unresolved boundary questions fed later Ecuadorian–Peruvian conflicts.
Inca conquest of Ecuador: The incorporation of much of present-day Ecuador into the Inca Empire during the fifteenth century. It transformed regional societies shortly before Spanish invasion.
Ecuadorian conservatism: A political tradition in Ecuador associated with Catholic influence, social hierarchy, and centralized authority. Its rivalry with liberalism shaped nineteenth-century conflicts over the state and church.
Eloy Alfaro: An Ecuadorian liberal leader who served as president and led the revolution of 1895. His government drove secular reforms and expanded national infrastructure.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: The conquest, settlement, and imperial rule imposed by Spain across much of the Americas from the late fifteenth century. Ecuador’s colonial history formed one regional part of this wider process.
Rio Protocol: The 1942 treaty intended to settle the boundary between Ecuador and Peru after their 1941 war. Its contested terms shaped Ecuador’s territorial claims for decades.
