Edison effect: Thermionic emission from a heated conductor, observed by Thomas Edison in an evacuated lamp. This observation supplied an early clue that electrons could carry current through a vacuum.
Triode: A three-electrode vacuum tube that controls current between cathode and anode with a grid. Grid control enabled the amplification that powered early electronic communication and computing.
John Ambrose Fleming: English electrical engineer who patented the two-electrode thermionic valve in 1904. His valve provided an early electronic rectifier for radio signals.
Electronic computer: A computer that uses electronic circuits to process and store information. Vacuum tubes and later transistors made high-speed computation possible.
Electrical power engineering: The engineering of systems that generate, transmit, distribute, and use electrical power. It focuses on energy delivery, whereas electronics engineering chiefly controls signals and information.
Vacuum tube: An evacuated or gas-filled tube that controls electrical current using electrodes. Vacuum tubes made amplification and switching practical before solid-state devices.
Bipolar junction transistor: A semiconductor device that controls current through interactions between two p–n junctions. It replaced many vacuum-tube functions with smaller, lower-power solid-state components.
Lee de Forest: American inventor who developed and patented the Audion, an early triode vacuum tube. His addition of a control grid enabled electronic amplification.
Microprocessor: A central processing unit implemented as an integrated circuit. Its emergence placed a computer’s core processing functions on a compact chip.
Analog electronics: Electronics that represent signals as continuously varying voltages or currents. Analog circuits dominated early amplification and remain central to sensing and radio interfaces.
