History of Eritrea

The history of Eritrea encompasses ancient societies, successive foreign rule, armed struggle, independence in 1993, and the development of the modern state.

Land of Punt: An ancient trading region known from Egyptian records, usually located around the southern Red Sea and Horn of Africa. Egyptian accounts place early Red Sea commerce near the region of present-day Eritrea.
Italian Eritrea: The Italian colony established in Eritrea in 1890 and ruled until Italy's defeat in 1941. Italian rule formalized colonial institutions and boundaries later inherited by the state.
