History of Estonia
The history of the region and people of Estonia, from prehistoric settlement through successive foreign rule to the modern independent republic.
Comb Ware culture: A Neolithic archaeological culture of northeastern Europe, known for pottery decorated with comb-like impressions. Its settlements and artifacts document some of the region’s earliest farming and foraging communities.
Swedish Estonia: The northern Estonian territories governed by Sweden from the sixteenth century until the Great Northern War. Swedish administration shaped education and law before Russian rule began.
Lydia Koidula: A nineteenth-century Estonian poet and playwright associated with the national awakening. Her writing helped give the emerging national movement a shared literary voice.
Estonian deportations: Mass forced removals of Estonian residents carried out chiefly by Soviet authorities during and after World War II. Deportations devastated families and communities and became central to memories of Soviet rule.
History of Latvia: The history of Latvia, from early Baltic societies through foreign rule to an independent republic. Latvia shares the region’s crusades, imperial borders, and Soviet occupation, but followed a distinct national path.

Carl Robert Jakobson: An Estonian writer, journalist, and political activist who advocated national rights in the nineteenth century. His public campaigns challenged Baltic German dominance and promoted Estonian civic ambitions.
Forest Brothers: Anti-Soviet guerrillas who resisted Soviet rule in Estonia and other Baltic countries after World War II. Their armed resistance persisted even as Soviet control consolidated.
