History of feminism

The history of feminism traces movements and ideas that have challenged women’s subordination and pursued equality across societies and periods.

Mary Wollstonecraft: An English writer whose 1792 work argued that women deserved equal education and rational independence. Her work became a landmark argument for women’s equality in the late eighteenth century.
Women's suffrage: The campaign to secure women’s legal right to vote in elections. Voting rights became a central, measurable demand of many early feminist campaigns.
Simone de Beauvoir: A French philosopher and writer whose 1949 book The Second Sex analyzed women’s social construction as the other. Her account of gender as a social condition influenced later feminist theory and activism.
