Lapita culture: An archaeological culture of western Pacific communities known for distinctive pottery and long-distance seafaring. Lapita pottery and settlement evidence trace early human movement into Fiji.
Cession of Fiji: The 1874 transfer of Fiji’s sovereignty to the British Crown by a group of Fijian chiefs. Cession began formal British colonial rule and reshaped chiefly authority.
Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau: A nineteenth-century Fijian chief who unified much of Fiji and ceded it to Britain in 1874. Cakobau’s political decisions culminated in Fiji’s transfer to British rule.
