History of France

The history of the people, territory, and political institutions of France from antiquity to the present, shaped by changing borders, regimes, and social structures.

Gaul: The region of western Europe inhabited by Celtic peoples before and during Roman rule. Roman conquest transformed the territory that later became the core of France.
Capetian dynasty: A French royal dynasty founded by Hugh Capet in 987 and continued through its Valois and Bourbon branches. Capetian rulers gradually extended royal authority and territory.
Joan of Arc: A French military figure who helped Charles VII’s forces during the Hundred Years’ War and was executed in 1431. Her role became a lasting symbol of French resistance and monarchy.
Hundred Years’ War: A series of conflicts between the English and French crowns from 1337 to 1453 over dynastic claims and territory. The war strengthened French royal authority while devastating parts of the kingdom.
French colonial empire: The overseas territories and dependencies ruled by France, especially from the seventeenth through twentieth centuries. Colonial expansion shaped French wealth, migration, and global power.
Gallic Wars: Julius Caesar’s campaigns that brought much of Gaul under Roman control from 58 to 50 BCE. Their outcome established Roman power across much of present-day France.
Estates-General: An assembly representing the clergy, nobility, and commoners of the French kingdom. Its 1789 meeting became a turning point in the collapse of royal government.
Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, associated with the consolidation of royal authority and the court at Versailles. His reign exemplifies the reach and limits of Bourbon absolutism.
French Wars of Religion: Conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in France from 1562 to 1598. They tested the monarchy’s ability to hold a religiously divided kingdom together.
Haitian Revolution: The uprising of enslaved people and subsequent conflicts that established Haiti’s independence from France in 1804. It challenged French colonial rule and the universal claims of revolutionary ideals.
