History of Ghana

The history of the West African country of Ghana spans early societies and kingdoms, British colonial rule, independence in 1957, and the development of the modern state.

Ghana Empire: A medieval West African state centered near the upper Niger River, distinct from the modern country of Ghana. Its name later inspired the independent country, although the empire lay far to the northwest.
Ashanti Empire: A powerful Akan state centered at Kumasi that expanded across much of present-day Ghana in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its rise and resistance defined a major part of the region's precolonial and colonial history.
Yaa Asantewaa: The Ashanti queen mother who led resistance to British forces during the War of the Golden Stool in 1900. Her leadership became a defining episode of resistance to colonial conquest.
Ghanaian independence: The end of British colonial rule and establishment of the independent state of Ghana on 6 March 1957. It made Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country under European colonial rule to gain independence in the postwar era.
1850 Danish sale of forts to Britain: The transfer of Denmark's forts and possessions on the Gold Coast to Britain in 1850. The sale expanded British influence along the coast before formal colonial consolidation.
Mali Empire: A medieval West African empire whose power and commerce spread across the western Sahel. Its trading networks connected the region that later became Ghana to wider West African economies.
Gold Coast (British colony): A British colonial territory on the Gulf of Guinea that became independent Ghana in 1957. Colonial administration consolidated territories that formed the borders of the modern state.
J. B. Danquah: A Ghanaian lawyer, politician, and nationalist who helped found the United Gold Coast Convention. His political organizing helped launch the nationalist movement before independence.
Pan-Africanism: A political and cultural movement promoting solidarity among people of African descent and African states. Ghana under Nkrumah became a prominent center for continental unity and anticolonial politics.
Anlo–British conflict of 1869–1870: A war between the Anlo Ewe and British forces on the Gold Coast in 1869–1870. It illustrates how British authority met resistance beyond the Ashanti heartland.
