History of Hesse

The history of Hesse traces the central German region from early tribal societies and medieval territorial states through division, reunification, and its modern role as a German federal state.

Chatti: The Chatti were an ancient Germanic people who lived mainly in what is now northern Hesse. Their territory overlapped much of the region that later became Hesse.
Landgraviate of Hesse: A principality of the Holy Roman Empire established in 1264 and ruled by the House of Hesse. It formed the central territorial state from which later Hessian lands emerged.
Hessian War: A conflict from 1469 to 1473 between the Landgraviate of Hesse and the Archbishopric of Mainz. The war strengthened Hessian territorial power against a major ecclesiastical neighbor.

Battle of Hanau: A 1813 battle in which Napoleon’s forces defeated Bavarian and Austrian troops near Hanau. The battle marked the retreat of French power through Hesse at the end of the Napoleonic era.
Francia: A Frankish kingdom that developed in western and central Europe after the fifth century. Frankish rule incorporated much of Hesse into a larger political order.
