History of human rights

The history of human rights traces how ideas, laws, and institutions recognizing the rights and dignity of human beings developed over time.

Cyrus Cylinder: An ancient clay inscription recording Cyrus the Great’s conquest of Babylon and restoration of local cults. Often cited as an early rights precedent, though its connection to modern human rights is disputed.
Virginia Declaration of Rights: A 1776 declaration asserting inherent rights and principles of popular government in Virginia. It influenced the language of later American and international rights declarations.
Olympe de Gouges: A French playwright and political writer who published the Declaration of the Rights of Woman in 1791. She challenged the exclusion of women from revolutionary claims to universal rights.
Slavery: A system in which people are treated as property and compelled to labor or serve. Its long legal acceptance sharply contradicted claims that all people possess equal rights.
Genocide Convention: The 1948 United Nations treaty requiring parties to prevent and punish genocide. It made protection against a mass atrocity a specific international legal obligation.
Stoicism: A Hellenistic philosophy holding that reason and virtue enable people to live in accordance with nature. Its idea of a shared rational nature helped inform claims of universal human dignity.
Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen: A 1789 French revolutionary declaration setting out liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty. It made universal rights central to a revolutionary constitutional program.
Frederick Douglass: An American abolitionist, writer, and statesman who escaped slavery and campaigned against it. His speeches and writings pressed the United States to honor its liberty claims.
Colonialism: A system in which one power controls another territory and its population, often for settlement or extraction. Colonial rule exposed the gap between universal rights language and imperial practice.
European Convention on Human Rights: A 1950 Council of Europe treaty protecting fundamental rights and freedoms in member states. It established a regional system through which individuals can bring claims against states.
