History of Jamaica

The history of Jamaica spans Indigenous Taíno societies, Spanish and British rule, slavery and emancipation, independence in 1962, and the island’s modern development.

Taíno: An Indigenous Caribbean people whose communities included the inhabitants of Jamaica before European colonization. Taíno communities, called Xaymaca by some accounts, lived on the island before Spanish rule.
Plantation economy of Jamaica: A colonial economy centered on sugar and other export crops produced by enslaved labor. Plantations drove wealth, settlement, and social hierarchy under British rule.
Nanny of the Maroons: An eighteenth-century Maroon leader associated with resistance to British rule in Jamaica. Her legacy represents Maroon resistance during the island’s colonial period.
Federation of the West Indies: A short-lived political union of British Caribbean territories that existed from 1958 to 1962. Its collapse cleared the way for Jamaica to pursue independence separately.

Atlantic slave trade: The forced transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic to labor in the Americas. The trade supplied the enslaved workforce that transformed Jamaica’s population and economy.
Samuel Sharpe: An enslaved Jamaican Baptist deacon who helped lead the 1831–1832 rebellion known as the Baptist War. His organizing helped make the crisis of slavery impossible for Britain to ignore.
Jamaican independence: Jamaica’s emergence as an independent state on 6 August 1962. Independence ended British colonial rule and established Jamaica’s parliamentary government.
Christopher Columbus: The Genoese navigator whose 1494 voyage brought Jamaica into sustained European contact. His arrival marked the beginning of Spanish claims to Jamaica.
Jamaican Maroons: Communities in Jamaica descended largely from Africans who escaped slavery and established independent settlements. Maroons resisted colonial control and secured recognition through treaties with Britain.
