Jōmon period: A prehistoric Japanese period marked by long-lived hunter-gatherer communities and distinctive pottery. Its settled communities and pottery provide the earliest enduring evidence of life in the Japanese archipelago.
Ritsuryō system: A centralized Japanese system of government based on legal codes, ranks, taxation, and provincial administration. Its codes organized the early imperial state and defined official authority.
Emperor Meiji: The Japanese emperor who reigned from 1867 to 1912 during the country’s rapid modernization. His reign gave its name to the reforms that transformed Japan into a modern state.
Perry Expedition to Japan: The 1853–1854 United States naval mission that pressured Japan to open its ports to foreign trade. Its arrival intensified the political crisis that preceded the end of Tokugawa rule.
Constitution of Japan: Japan’s postwar constitution, promulgated in 1946 and effective from 1947, defining its political system and renouncing war. It codified the postwar settlement and continues to shape debates over sovereignty and defense.
Yayoi period: A Japanese archaeological period associated with wet-rice agriculture, metalworking, and new continental influences. Rice farming and new technologies helped transform society after the Jōmon period.
Shogunate: A Japanese military government led by a shogun, historically operating alongside the imperial court. Shogun-led governments governed Japan for much of its history while retaining the emperor as sovereign.
Itō Hirobumi: A Japanese statesman who helped shape the Meiji constitution and became Japan’s first prime minister. His constitutional work helped define the institutions of the modern Japanese government.
First Sino-Japanese War: The 1894–1895 war between Japan and Qing China over influence in Korea. Japan’s victory established it as a major regional power and accelerated imperial expansion.
Japanese economic history: The development of Japan’s economy from agrarian society through industrialization and postwar growth. Economic change tracks the transformations from feudal domains to a major industrial economy.
