History of Kosovo

The history of Kosovo traces the region’s societies and political status from ancient times through Ottoman rule, Yugoslav periods, conflict, and the establishment of the Republic of Kosovo.

Battle of Kosovo: A 1389 battle between Serbian forces and their allies and the Ottoman army on the Kosovo field. Its later commemoration became central to Serbian national memory and competing claims to the region.
Ottoman rule in Kosovo: The centuries-long Ottoman administration of the territory now known as Kosovo, from the late medieval period until the Balkan Wars. Ottoman institutions and social changes shaped the region before modern national borders.
Ibrahim Rugova: A Kosovo Albanian intellectual and politician who led a nonviolent resistance movement and became Kosovo’s first president. His parallel institutions embodied the peaceful strategy of the 1990s Albanian opposition.

Adem Jashari: A founding member of the Kosovo Liberation Army who was killed with members of his family in 1998. His death became a major symbol of armed resistance to Serbian rule.
International recognition of Kosovo: The diplomatic recognition of Kosovo as an independent state by some countries and its non-recognition by others. Uneven recognition makes Kosovo’s declaration of independence an unsettled international question.
Kosovo Vilayet: An Ottoman administrative province established in 1877, encompassing parts of present-day Kosovo and neighboring regions. Its shifting borders show that Kosovo’s modern territorial shape was not a fixed inheritance.
Kingdom of Yugoslavia: A South Slavic monarchy established in 1918, known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until 1929. Kosovo became part of the new kingdom after Serbia’s wartime expansion.
