History of Laos

The history of Laos encompasses the kingdoms, colonial rule, conflicts, and political transformations that shaped the modern Lao state.

Kingdom of Lan Xang: A Lao kingdom founded in the fourteenth century that ruled much of the Mekong region until its fragmentation in 1707. Lan Xang established an early Lao political and cultural legacy.
Tai peoples: A diverse group of peoples speaking languages in the Tai branch of the Kra–Dai language family. Tai migrations into the Mekong region preceded the rise of Lao kingdoms.
Fa Ngum: The founder and first ruler of Lan Xang, who established the kingdom in 1353. His reign marks the formation of a unified Lao kingdom.
Unexploded ordnance in Laos: Bombs and other munitions that failed to detonate during the Indochina conflicts and remain hazardous in Laos. Unexploded ordnance continues to cause casualties and constrain land use decades after the war.
French Protectorate of Laos: The French colonial administration that governed Laos from the late nineteenth century until independence in 1953. French rule brought Laos into French Indochina and reshaped its borders and administration.
Mekong River: A major river in Southeast Asia that flows through or along six countries, including Laos. The river corridor connected Lao settlements, trade, and political centers.
Chao Anouvong: The last king of Vientiane, who led a failed rebellion against Siam in 1826–1828. His rebellion and defeat altered the balance of power in the Lao territories.
Hmong people: An ethnic group with communities across Southeast Asia, including a substantial population in Laos. Hmong communities were deeply affected by the civil war and its aftermath.
Lao Civil War: The conflict in Laos from 1959 to 1975 between the royal government and the communist Pathet Lao, with extensive foreign intervention. The war made Laos a major theater of the Cold War and devastated the country.
Theravada Buddhism: A Buddhist tradition prominent in Sri Lanka and mainland Southeast Asia, based on the Pali canon. Its institutions and practices shaped Lao royal legitimacy and everyday life.
