History of Liberia

The history of Liberia traces the settlement of free Black people from the United States, the republic’s founding in 1847, and its political and social changes through the present.

American Colonization Society: A U.S. organization founded in 1816 to promote the migration of free African Americans to Africa. It organized the settlement that became Liberia, combining Black emigration with white-led colonization aims.
Americo-Liberians: The descendants of Black American settlers in Liberia, who dominated national politics for much of the republic’s early history. Their political dominance structured the state’s relationship with Indigenous Liberian communities.
Joseph Jenkins Roberts: Liberia’s first president, who served from 1848 to 1856 and again from 1872 to 1876. He led the new republic’s early efforts to establish sovereignty and international recognition.
Grebo Wars: Nineteenth-century conflicts between the Liberian state and Grebo communities in southeastern Liberia. They show how state expansion provoked resistance from Indigenous communities.
Haiti: A Caribbean republic founded in 1804 after a successful revolution by enslaved and free Black people. Its independence emerged from revolution, unlike Liberia’s organized settlement and declaration of sovereignty.
Black American emigration to Liberia: The migration of free Black people from the United States to Liberia during the nineteenth century. These settlers formed the population from which the republic’s early political elite emerged.
True Whig Party: Liberia’s dominant political party from 1878 until the 1980 coup. Its long rule concentrated power among Americo-Liberian elites and constrained political competition.
Edward Wilmot Blyden: A Liberian educator, diplomat, and writer who promoted African identity and Pan-African thought. His writings challenged colonial assumptions and debated the cultural direction of the republic.
Hinterland Campaigns: Early twentieth-century Liberian military campaigns that extended government control into the interior. They reveal the coercive means used to bring inland communities under national administration.
Sierra Leone: A West African country whose capital, Freetown, was founded as a settlement for formerly enslaved people and Black loyalists. Its settlement history offers a close comparison with Liberia’s, but Britain retained colonial rule there.
