History of Lithuania

The history of Lithuania traces the development of Baltic societies, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, changing unions and occupations, and the modern republic.

Kingdom of Lithuania: A short-lived medieval Lithuanian kingdom established when Mindaugas was crowned in 1253. Mindaugas’s coronation marks Lithuania’s first Christian kingship and a pivotal early state-building episode.
Christianization of Lithuania: The adoption of Christianity by Lithuania, formally initiated by the conversion of Jogaila and the baptism of Lithuania in 1387. Christianization altered diplomacy, institutions, and Lithuania’s relationship with Catholic Europe.
Mindaugas: The Lithuanian ruler crowned king in 1253, traditionally regarded as the founder of the Lithuanian state. His consolidation of power created the first enduring Lithuanian political center.
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federal state formed in 1569 by the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its shared institutions and separate Lithuanian traditions complicate simple national histories.

Union of Lublin: The 1569 agreement that joined the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania in a commonwealth. It transformed Lithuania’s political relationship with Poland while preserving distinct institutions.
Lithuanian press ban: A Russian imperial restriction, enforced from 1864 to 1904, on Lithuanian publications printed in the Latin alphabet. The ban spurred clandestine publishing and strengthened Lithuanian national identity.
