History of Madagascar

The history of Madagascar traces settlement from the first millennium CE through the rise of kingdoms, French colonial rule, independence, and later political change.

Austronesian peoples: A diverse group of peoples whose languages descend from Proto-Austronesian and whose historic migrations spread across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Austronesian-speaking settlers crossed the Indian Ocean and helped shape Madagascar’s early population and language.
Merina Kingdom: A highland Malagasy kingdom that expanded under the Merina monarchy and became the island’s dominant state in the nineteenth century. Its expansion unified much of Madagascar before French conquest.
Malagasy independence: The end of French colonial rule and establishment of the Malagasy Republic as an independent state in 1960. Independence transformed colonial institutions into those of a sovereign republic.
Malagasy Socialist Revolution: The political transformation launched in 1975 under Didier Ratsiraka, which adopted socialist policies and renamed the state the Democratic Republic of Madagascar. It replaced the first republic’s political direction with a socialist state project.
Bantu peoples: A broad grouping of sub-Saharan African peoples whose languages belong to the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo family. Bantu-speaking migrants from Africa contributed to Madagascar’s population, culture, and language.
Sakalava Kingdoms: Western Malagasy polities that formed powerful kingdoms from the seventeenth century, notably Menabe and Boina. Their rise shows how regional states developed alongside, and sometimes rivaled, Merina power.
Philibert Tsiranana: The first president of Madagascar, serving from independence in 1960 until his resignation in 1972. His presidency led the early republic and maintained close ties with France.
Didier Ratsiraka: A Malagasy naval officer and politician who served as president from 1975 to 1993 and again from 1997 to 2002. His long rule defined the socialist period and a later return to multiparty politics.
Malagasy language: The Austronesian language spoken across Madagascar, with substantial influence from Bantu and other contact languages. Its Austronesian roots and African influences preserve evidence of the island’s settlement and later exchanges.
Antemoro people: A Malagasy ethnic group from the southeast, historically known for Islamic scholarly traditions and manuscript production. Antemoro advisers and scribes influenced statecraft and literacy in several Malagasy courts.
