The history of Maharashtra traces the western Indian region from prehistoric settlements through ancient kingdoms, Maratha power, colonial rule, and the formation of the modern state.

Jorwe culture: A Chalcolithic archaeological culture in the Deccan, known especially from settlements in present-day Maharashtra. Its settlements offer evidence of organized life in the region before historic kingdoms.
Shivaji: A seventeenth-century ruler who founded the Maratha kingdom and challenged Mughal and Deccan Sultanate power. His campaigns and institutions created the basis for Maratha statehood.
Jyotirao Phule: A nineteenth-century Indian social reformer who opposed caste hierarchy and promoted education for women and oppressed communities. His work in Pune challenged social structures inherited by modern Maharashtra.
Indian independence movement: The political struggle that ended British rule in India and led to independence in 1947. Maharashtra’s activists, organizations, and cities were prominent in the wider struggle.
Deccan Sultanates: A group of Muslim-ruled states that emerged in the Deccan after the Bahmani Sultanate fragmented. Their rivalries and alliances formed the political setting in which Shivaji rose.
Satavahana dynasty: An ancient Indian dynasty that ruled much of the Deccan, with its power centered partly in present-day Maharashtra. Satavahana rule established an early regional power across the Deccan.
Maratha Empire: A South Asian empire that expanded from western India under Maratha leadership from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. It carried Maharashtra-based political power across much of the subcontinent.
Savitribai Phule: An Indian educator and social reformer who pioneered girls’ education and worked against caste discrimination. Her educational activism became a landmark in Maharashtra’s reform history.
Quit India Movement: A 1942 campaign launched by the Indian National Congress demanding an end to British rule. The movement began in Bombay and drew strong participation across Maharashtra.
Mughal Empire: A South Asian empire that ruled large parts of the subcontinent from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Mughal power repeatedly contested the Maratha kingdom and later the expanding Maratha state.
