History of Malawi

The history of the territory and peoples of present-day Malawi, from early settlement through British colonial rule to independence and the modern state.

Maravi Empire: A succession of states associated with the Chewa people that flourished around Lake Malawi from the seventeenth century. Its rise and fragmentation shaped political life before European rule.
Ngoni migrations: Nineteenth-century migrations of Ngoni groups into central and southern Africa, driven by upheaval in southern Africa. Their settlement altered power relations and patterns of conflict in the region.
John Chilembwe: A Baptist minister who led an uprising against colonial rule in Nyasaland in 1915. His revolt became an enduring symbol of resistance to colonial authority.
Shire Highlands: A fertile plateau region in southern Malawi that became a center of European settlement and commercial agriculture. Estate expansion there concentrated land and helped entrench colonial labor demands.
Lake Malawi: A large freshwater lake in southeastern Africa, bordered by Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. The lake connected communities and trade routes before and during colonial expansion.
David Livingstone: A Scottish missionary and explorer whose journeys in southern Africa drew British attention to the region. His travels along Lake Malawi helped spur British intervention.
African Lakes Company: A British commercial enterprise founded in 1878 to promote trade and oppose the slave trade around Lake Malawi. Its trading posts extended British commercial influence before formal annexation.
Levi Zililo Mumba: A Malawian educator and political organizer who helped found the Nyasaland African Congress. His organizing built an early platform for African political representation.
Nyasaland African Congress: An African nationalist organization founded in 1944 to campaign for political rights in Nyasaland. It organized opposition to colonial rule and the Central African Federation.
Bantu expansion: The long-term spread of Bantu-speaking peoples, languages, and farming practices across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It provides broad context for the settlement and language history of Malawi’s peoples.
