Uruk period: A late fourth-millennium BCE phase marked by urban growth, monumental architecture, and early writing in southern Mesopotamia. Uruk’s expansion marks the emergence of the region’s first cities and administrative institutions.
Mesopotamian irrigation: The management of rivers and canals to supply water to Mesopotamian fields. Canal systems enabled intensive agriculture but required coordination and maintenance.

Hammurabi: The sixth king of Babylon’s First Dynasty, who ruled in the eighteenth century BCE. His reign marks Babylon’s rise and is associated with a famous law collection.
Code of Hammurabi: A Babylonian royal inscription containing legal provisions and an account of Hammurabi’s justice. The monument became one of the most recognizable legacies of Babylonian rule.
