History of Monaco

The history of Monaco traces its development from ancient settlement and Genoese rule through Grimaldi sovereignty, French influence, and the modern principality.

Ligurian people: An ancient people of northwestern Italy and neighboring Mediterranean regions, including parts of the French Riviera. Ligurian communities inhabited the coast around Monaco before Roman rule.
Treaty of Péronne (1641): A 1641 agreement between Monaco and France that ended Spanish protection and established a French alliance. Honoré II’s treaty shifted Monaco from Spanish dependence to French protection.
Menton: A coastal town on the French Riviera that belonged to Monaco until its cession to France in 1861. Its separation, alongside Roquebrune, sharply reduced Monaco’s territory and population.
