History of Montenegro

The history of Montenegro traces the region from early Slavic settlement and medieval principalities through Ottoman-era autonomy, modern statehood, Yugoslavia, and independence in 2006.

Duklja: A medieval South Slavic principality centered in what is now Montenegro, prominent from the tenth to twelfth centuries. Duklja was the region’s earliest major principality and a predecessor to later Montenegrin polities.
Montenegrin prince-bishops: Orthodox church leaders who governed Montenegro as hereditary rulers from the late seventeenth century until 1852. Their combined religious and political authority sustained a distinctive form of rule under Ottoman pressure.
Battle of Mojkovac: A January 1916 battle in which Montenegrin forces fought Austro-Hungarian troops during the First World War. The battle became a symbol of Montenegrin resistance during the collapse of the kingdom.
Serbian–Montenegrin unionism: A political position favoring close union or shared statehood between Montenegro and Serbia. Unionism opposed the independence movement that prevailed in the 2006 referendum.
Principality of Zeta: A medieval state in the western Balkans centered in the region of Zeta, which became part of present-day Montenegro. Zeta succeeded Duklja as the principal medieval polity in the region.
Battle of Grahovac: A Montenegrin victory over Ottoman forces in 1858 that strengthened Montenegro’s claim to independence. The victory prompted international recognition of Montenegro’s territorial gains.
Christmas Uprising: A 1919 revolt by supporters of Montenegrin independence against the union with Serbia. The uprising exposed the deep opposition to the 1918 unification decision.
Montenegrin independence movement: A political movement seeking a sovereign Montenegrin state, especially prominent during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Its success reversed the unionist outcome of 1918 and ended the state union with Serbia.
Crnojević dynasty: A ruling family that governed Zeta in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The Crnojevići maintained Zeta’s autonomy as Ottoman power expanded and established a major printing press.
Congress of Berlin: The 1878 diplomatic congress that revised European borders and recognized the independence of Montenegro and several other states. It converted Montenegro’s de facto autonomy into internationally recognized statehood.
