History of Morocco

The history of Morocco traces the peoples, states, and events that shaped the country from antiquity to the present.

Mauretania (ancient kingdom): An ancient North African kingdom encompassing parts of present-day Morocco and Algeria. Its territory and rulers formed part of Morocco’s pre-Roman political landscape.
Marinid dynasty: A Berber dynasty that ruled Morocco from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The Marinids restored Fez as a major capital after the Almohad empire fragmented.
Portuguese presence in Morocco: The Portuguese occupation of coastal Moroccan strongholds from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Portuguese forts and campaigns challenged Moroccan rulers and reshaped Atlantic coastal politics.
Idris I of Morocco: An eighth-century Arab ruler who founded the Idrisid dynasty in present-day Morocco. His reign began the dynasty associated with Morocco’s earliest lasting Muslim state.
