History of Nigeria

The history of Nigeria traces the societies and states that developed in the region, British colonial rule, independence in 1960, and the republic’s subsequent political and social changes.

Nok culture: An archaeological culture in central Nigeria, known for terracotta sculptures and early ironworking. Its terracottas and ironworking provide some of the earliest evidence of complex societies in the region.
Berlin Conference: A meeting of European powers in 1884–1885 that established rules for claiming territory in Africa. Its imperial framework preceded Britain’s consolidation of authority over Nigerian territories.

Nigerian military juntas: The military governments that ruled Nigeria during several periods between 1966 and 1999. Repeated coups interrupted civilian government and reorganized the country’s political institutions.
