History of North Korea

The historical development of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, from its emergence in the aftermath of World War II through its changing political, social, and economic systems.

Korea under Japanese rule: The period from 1910 to 1945 when the Korean Peninsula was annexed and governed by the Japanese Empire. Japanese colonial rule shaped liberation politics and the political forces active at the 1945 division.
Workers' Party of Korea: The ruling political party of North Korea, which dominates the state and its political institutions. Party control has organized political authority throughout the country’s history.
Korean War: The 1950–1953 war between North Korea and South Korea, involving major intervention by China and the United States-led United Nations Command. The war devastated the peninsula and hardened the division that shaped subsequent North Korean history.
North Korean famine: The mass starvation and food crisis that struck North Korea during the 1990s, killing hundreds of thousands or more. The famine was the most devastating consequence of the 1990s economic crisis.
South Korea: The state occupying the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula, formally known as the Republic of Korea. Its separate development provides the central political and economic comparison with North Korea.
Division of Korea: The separation of the Korean Peninsula into Soviet- and United States-occupied zones in 1945, followed by rival states. The occupation-zone boundary became the foundation for two competing Korean governments.
Juche: North Korea’s official ideology, associated with self-reliance and developed under Kim Il Sung’s leadership. Its evolution helped legitimize political autonomy and the leadership’s policy choices.
Korean Armistice Agreement: The 1953 agreement that halted active fighting in the Korean War without concluding a peace treaty. The armistice left North Korea in a prolonged military standoff rather than a formal peace.
North Korean defectors: People who have left North Korea without authorization, often seeking permanent resettlement elsewhere. Their experiences reflect pressures that have driven migration across different periods.
Korean reunification: The proposed political reunification of North Korea and South Korea into a single Korean state. Reunification has remained a recurring claim and unresolved question in inter-Korean history.
