History of Oregon

The history of Oregon spans Indigenous societies, European exploration and colonization, U.S. settlement, statehood in 1859, and subsequent social, economic, and political change.

Chinookan peoples: Indigenous peoples whose communities historically occupied the lower Columbia River region. Chinookan trade networks and villages anchored life along the Columbia before U.S. settlement.
Oregon Trail: A 2,170-mile emigrant route connecting the Missouri River region to Oregon's Willamette Valley. The trail carried thousands of U.S. settlers into Oregon during the mid-nineteenth century.
Rogue River Wars: A series of armed conflicts between Indigenous peoples and U.S. forces in southwestern Oregon during the 1850s. The wars ended in displacement and forced relocation of many Native people.
Fort Vancouver: A Hudson's Bay Company trading post established in 1825 on the north bank of the Columbia River. The post served as the main British commercial and administrative center in the region.
Oregon land acknowledgments: Statements recognizing Indigenous peoples' enduring relationships to particular lands and places. They raise questions about how public institutions should acknowledge Oregon's Indigenous homelands.
Kalapuya: Indigenous peoples whose homelands include the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. Kalapuya communities shaped the valley later transformed by disease, treaties, and settler migration.
Oregon Donation Land Act: An 1850 U.S. law granting land in Oregon Territory to qualifying white settlers and their families. Its land grants accelerated settlement while excluding Indigenous people and restricting Black settlement.
Modoc War: An 1872–1873 conflict between the Modoc people and U.S. forces in northern California and southern Oregon. It exposed the violent consequences of federal efforts to confine Modoc people to reservations.
Whitman massacre: The 1847 killing of missionary Marcus Whitman, Narcissa Whitman, and others near present-day Walla Walla, Washington. The event intensified U.S. settlement pressure and helped prompt the creation of Oregon Territory.
Oregon Indian termination: Federal policies ending the recognized status of selected Oregon tribes and transferring their lands during the mid-twentieth century. Termination's effects on tribal sovereignty and community continuity remain central to Oregon history.
