Hippocratic medicine: An ancient Greek medical tradition associated with Hippocrates that emphasized observation, prognosis, and natural causes of illness. Its naturalistic account of disease helped displace supernatural explanations in Greek medicine.
Autopsy: The examination of a body after death to determine disease, injury, or cause of death. Postmortem findings supplied the evidence for linking symptoms to internal lesions.
Theodor Schwann: A German physiologist who helped establish cell theory by extending it to animals. His work supplied a premise later used to explain disease at the cellular level.

Galen: A Greek physician whose writings shaped medicine in Europe and the Middle East for more than a millennium. His anatomical and physiological ideas framed disease accounts long before systematic postmortem study.
Cell theory: The biological principle that living organisms are composed of cells, which arise from preexisting cells. It provided the framework for Virchow’s claim that disease originates in altered cells.
