History of Pomerania

The history of Pomerania traces a southern Baltic region shaped by Slavic communities, German settlement, competing states, and repeated border changes.

Pomeranian Slavs: West Slavic peoples who inhabited the southern Baltic coast in the early medieval period. Their communities formed the region’s earliest documented political and cultural foundations.
Peace of Westphalia: The 1648 treaties that ended the Thirty Years’ War and reshaped political authority in Europe. Its settlement divided Pomerania between Sweden and Brandenburg after the Griffin dynasty ended.
Prussian Pomerania: The province of Pomerania within the Kingdom of Prussia and later the German Empire. Prussian administration shaped the region until Germany’s defeat in 1945.
Mecklenburg: A historic region and former state in northeastern Germany, west of Pomerania. Its separate duchies and identity help distinguish Pomerania’s western neighbor.
Duchy of Pomerania: A medieval and early modern polity ruled by the House of Griffins across much of Pomerania. It consolidated local rule before Pomerania fragmented among larger powers.
Swedish Pomerania: The part of Pomerania governed by Sweden from the seventeenth century until 1815. Swedish rule made the region a strategic foothold in the southern Baltic.
Pomeranian Voivodeship: A modern administrative province in northern Poland, established in 1999. It represents one present-day Polish successor region to historic Pomerania.
West Prussia: A former Prussian province on the southern Baltic, east of Pomerania. Its shifting borders and Polish connections shaped Pomerania’s eastern frontier.
Ostsiedlung: The medieval migration and settlement of German-speaking people into central and eastern Europe. German settlement transformed Pomerania’s towns, institutions, language, and landholding.
Brandenburg-Prussia: The Hohenzollern state that expanded into a major European power and later formed the core of Prussia. Its acquisitions brought most of Pomerania under Prussian rule.
