James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose equations describe how electric and magnetic fields propagate as electromagnetic waves. His theory predicted the waves that later made wireless communication possible.
Spark-gap transmitter: A radio transmitter that produces brief electromagnetic oscillations by discharging a capacitor across a spark gap. Early wireless telegraphy relied on spark transmitters, which sent crude, broadband signals.
Wireless telegraphy: The transmission of coded messages by radio waves without a physical wire connection. It was radio's first major practical service, especially for ships and coastal stations.

Guglielmo Marconi: An Italian inventor who developed practical wireless telegraphy systems and commercialized long-distance radio communication. His equipment and demonstrations helped turn laboratory discoveries into a communication service.
Amplitude modulation: A modulation method that encodes information by varying a carrier wave's amplitude. AM made continuous speech and music transmission practical for broadcasting.
