Ahar-Banas culture: A Chalcolithic archaeological culture of southeastern Rajasthan, known for copper use and distinctive black-and-red pottery. Its settlements reveal early farming communities in the region.
Rajput states: Regional kingdoms and principalities ruled by Rajput dynasties across northern and western India. Their rival courts formed the region’s enduring political structure.
Prithviraj Chauhan: A twelfth-century Chauhan ruler of Ajmer and Delhi, remembered for his conflicts with Ghurid forces. His reign marks the prominence of the Chauhan kingdom in medieval Rajasthan.
Battle of Khanwa: A 1527 battle near Agra in which Babur defeated a confederacy led by Rana Sanga of Mewar. Its outcome weakened Mewar’s bid to dominate north India.
Rajasthan: A state in northwestern India, formed in its present boundaries in 1956 and comprising 33 districts. It is the modern territorial outcome of the region’s political integration.
Indus Valley Civilization: A Bronze Age civilization centered in the Indus basin, with urban settlements across parts of South Asia. Its eastern settlements extended into what is now northern Rajasthan.
Mughal-Rajput relations: The changing military, diplomatic, and marital ties between Mughal emperors and Rajput rulers. These alliances reshaped Rajput sovereignty and imperial authority.
Maharana Pratap: A sixteenth-century ruler of Mewar who resisted Mughal expansion under Akbar. His resistance became a defining episode in Mewar’s political memory.
Siege of Chittorgarh (1567–1568): A Mughal siege in which Akbar captured the Mewar fortress of Chittorgarh from its defenders. The conquest tested Mewar’s independence and altered its relations with the Mughal court.
Rajputana: The historical name for a region of princely states and territories largely corresponding to present-day Rajasthan. Its shifting boundaries and princely structure preceded the modern state.
