History of Russia

The history of Russia traces the lands and states associated with Russia from medieval Rus’ polities through the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and modern Russian Federation.

Kievan Rus’: A medieval East Slavic polity centered on Kyiv that flourished from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Its fragmentation and legacy shaped later Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian histories.
Varangians: Scandinavian traders and warriors active in eastern Europe and the Byzantine world during the Viking Age. Their role in early Rus’ state formation remains central to debates about its origins.
Ivan the Terrible: The first ruler crowned tsar of all Russia, reigning from 1547 to 1584. His conquests and centralizing rule expanded Muscovy while intensifying coercion.
Time of Troubles: A period of dynastic crisis, famine, foreign intervention, and civil conflict in Russia from 1598 to 1613. Its resolution established the Romanov dynasty and restored central authority.
Zemsky Sobor: An assembly of representatives of Russian estates convened by the tsar in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its intermittent participation contrasts with the growth of centralized autocratic rule.
Mongol invasion of Rus’: The thirteenth-century conquest of Rus’ principalities by Mongol forces, followed by generations of Mongol rule. Mongol domination altered Rus’ political development and shifted power toward northeastern principalities.
Rurik: A semi-legendary Varangian ruler whom the Primary Chronicle identifies as founder of the Rurik dynasty. The dynasty attributed to him ruled Rus’ and later Muscovy for centuries.
Peter the Great: The Russian ruler who reigned as tsar and emperor from 1682 to 1725. His military and administrative reforms transformed Russia into a European empire.
Emancipation reform of 1861: The Russian imperial reform that abolished legal serfdom in 1861. It freed millions while leaving land disputes and social inequality unresolved.
Decembrist revolt: An unsuccessful uprising by Russian army officers in December 1825 seeking political reform. It exposed an early organized challenge to autocracy among elite reformers.
