History of Slovakia

The history of Slovakia traces the peoples, territories, and political institutions of the region from prehistoric settlement to the present Slovak Republic.

Great Moravia: A ninth-century Slavic polity centered in parts of present-day Moravia and Slovakia. Its rulers brought a major early Slavic state to lands that now include Slovakia.
Battle of Mohács: A 1526 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Kingdom of Hungary. Its aftermath divided the kingdom and began a long Habsburg era in much of Slovakia.
Ľudovít Štúr: A nineteenth-century Slovak writer and political leader who codified the Slovak literary language. His language reform gave the national movement a shared written standard.
Slovak national revival: A nineteenth-century movement to develop Slovak language, culture, and political identity. It laid the cultural and political groundwork for modern Slovak nationhood.
Slovak–Hungarian relations: The historical and contemporary relations between Slovaks and Hungarians and their states. Language, borders, and minority rights recur throughout Slovakia’s history.
Nitra Principality: An early medieval principality centered on Nitra in present-day Slovakia. It was a key predecessor polity in the region before Great Moravia.
Bratislava: The capital and largest city of Slovakia, historically known as Pressburg and Pozsony. It served as the Kingdom of Hungary’s coronation city during Ottoman rule.
Milan Rastislav Štefánik: A Slovak astronomer, military officer, and diplomat who helped establish Czechoslovakia. His diplomacy linked Slovak aspirations to the creation of the 1918 state.
Czechoslovakism: A political and cultural idea that treated Czechs and Slovaks as branches of one Czechoslovak nation. It offered a shared-state identity that sometimes conflicted with Slovak demands for autonomy.
Slovak autonomy: The political principle that Slovakia should govern its domestic affairs within a larger state. Autonomy demands repeatedly tested the balance between Slovak and Czechoslovak institutions.
