History of Somalia

The history of Somalia traces the societies and political forces of the Horn of Africa from ancient trade networks through colonial rule, independence, state collapse, and later reconstruction.

Adal Sultanate: A medieval and early modern Muslim sultanate in the Horn of Africa, centered in present-day Somaliland and eastern Ethiopia. Its wars with Ethiopia and links to Red Sea trade shaped the region before European colonial rule.
Land of Punt: An ancient trading region known from Egyptian records, usually placed somewhere in the Horn of Africa or nearby Red Sea coast. Its possible location in the Horn links the region to long-distance exchange in antiquity.
Mohammed Abdullah Hassan: A Somali religious and political leader who led the Dervish Movement against colonial forces from the late nineteenth century. His resistance became one of the most prominent anticolonial struggles in Somali history.
