The study of how statistical ideas, methods, and institutions developed over time, from state record-keeping to modern inference and computation.

Political arithmetic: A seventeenth-century approach to studying society through numerical records and quantitative reasoning. William Petty and others used numerical argument to make early claims about populations and national wealth.
Probability theory: The mathematical study of random events and the likelihood of their outcomes. Probability supplied a formal language for uncertainty in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century statistics.
Adolphe Quetelet: A Belgian astronomer and statistician who applied probability and the concept of the average man to social data. His work helped establish statistical regularities as a way to study human populations.
Demography: The study of human populations, including their size, composition, and change over time. Population counts and vital records were among statistics’ earliest sustained applications.
Frequentist statistics: An approach that interprets probability through long-run frequencies and evaluates procedures by repeated-sampling behavior. It contrasts with Bayesian accounts that assign probabilities to hypotheses or unknown parameters.
John Graunt: An English statistician whose analysis of London’s Bills of Mortality helped establish demographic reasoning. His 1662 analysis turned death records into estimates of population patterns and life expectancy.
Bayes' theorem: A rule for updating the probability of a hypothesis given new evidence. Its publication in 1763 became a foundation for later approaches to statistical inference.
Florence Nightingale: A British nurse and statistician who used data visualization and mortality statistics in public health reform. Her hospital mortality analyses connected statistical presentation to concrete policy change.
Actuarial science: The use of mathematics and statistics to assess financial risk, especially in insurance and pensions. Life tables and probability helped insurers price policies and manage long-term obligations.
Bayesian statistics: An approach that represents uncertainty with probability distributions and updates them using Bayes’ theorem. Its revival challenged the frequentist dominance that shaped much twentieth-century statistical practice.
