The development of operative techniques, instruments, and surgical practice across human history, shaped by changing ideas about anatomy, infection, pain, and healing.

Trepanation: A surgical opening made in the skull, practiced in many prehistoric and ancient societies. Evidence of early cranial operations appears in archaeological remains across widely separated cultures.
Ether anesthesia: The use of diethyl ether to produce unconsciousness during surgery. Public demonstrations in 1846 made prolonged operations possible without unbearable pain.
Ambroise Paré: A sixteenth-century French surgeon known for improving wound care and replacing cauterization with ligatures. His battlefield practice helped establish more humane methods of treating wounds.
Organ transplantation: The transfer of an organ from a donor to a recipient to restore bodily function. Transplantation became feasible through advances in operative technique and immunology.
Surgical site infection: An infection that develops in the part of the body where an operation was performed. Its reduction became a central measure of the gains made through antisepsis and asepsis.
Edwin Smith Papyrus: An ancient Egyptian medical text describing injuries, examinations, diagnoses, and treatments. Its case-based accounts document organized surgical care in ancient Egypt.
Joseph Lister: A British surgeon who developed antiseptic methods based on germ theory. Lister applied carbolic acid to reduce infection in surgical wounds.
John Hunter: An eighteenth-century British surgeon and anatomist who promoted observation and experimental study. Hunter helped make surgery a learned, investigative profession rather than manual craft alone.
Cardiac surgery: Surgical treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the heart and great vessels. It required new ways to operate on a moving organ and manage circulation.
Anesthesia: The use of drugs or techniques to prevent pain and awareness during medical procedures. Pain control transformed surgery from brief restraint-based procedures into planned operations.
