History of Sydney

The history of Sydney traces the city’s development from thousands of years of Aboriginal life on Gadigal Country through British colonization to its growth as Australia’s largest metropolis.

Gadigal: The Aboriginal people whose Country includes the area around Sydney Cove and much of central Sydney. Sydney Cove lies on Gadigal Country, inhabited long before British settlement.
Port Jackson: The harbour on which central Sydney stands, known for its deep inlets and sheltered waters. Its geography provided the anchorage and waterways around which Sydney expanded.
Pemulwuy: A Bidjigal resistance leader who fought British colonization around Sydney in the late eighteenth century. His resistance challenged the colony’s expansion onto Aboriginal land.
Australian frontier wars: A series of conflicts between Aboriginal peoples and European colonists during the colonization of Australia. Violence around the colony formed part of the wider dispossession of Aboriginal peoples.
Eora: A name used for Aboriginal people of the Sydney region and, in some contexts, their language. The city’s colonial history unfolded across the lands of Sydney’s Aboriginal communities.
New South Wales penal colony: The British convict colony established in 1788 across territory that later became New South Wales. Sydney developed as the colony’s administrative and commercial centre.
Barangaroo: A Cammeraygal woman and prominent Aboriginal figure in early colonial Sydney. Her life illuminates Aboriginal authority and diplomacy during the colony’s founding years.
Sydney Gold Rush: The economic and population boom in Sydney following the discovery of gold in New South Wales in 1851. Gold discoveries accelerated migration, commerce, and Sydney’s growth.
First Fleet: The eleven British ships that carried convicts and settlers to establish a colony at Port Jackson in 1788. Its arrival began Britain’s permanent settlement at Sydney Cove.
Convict transportation: The British practice of sending convicted people to penal colonies overseas, including Australia. Convict labour and migration shaped Sydney’s population and early infrastructure.
