Ebla: An ancient Syrian kingdom centered at Tell Mardikh, prominent in the third millennium BCE. Its archives reveal the political and economic life of one of Syria’s earliest urban kingdoms.
Umayyad Caliphate: The first hereditary Islamic caliphate, ruling from Damascus from 661 to 750. Its capital made Syria the center of an empire spanning from Iberia to Central Asia.
Faisal I of Iraq: A Hashemite ruler who briefly became king of Syria in 1920 before French forces expelled him. His short-lived kingdom embodied Syrian hopes for post-Ottoman Arab independence.
Syrian independence: The end of French mandate rule and establishment of Syria as an independent state in 1946. Independence began a period of parliamentary politics, military coups, and contested governance.
Ugarit: A Late Bronze Age port city on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, known for its alphabetic cuneiform texts. Its texts illuminate Canaanite religion, diplomacy, and writing in ancient Syria.
Abbasid Caliphate: An Islamic caliphate founded in 750 that governed much of the Middle East from Baghdad. The transfer of power to Baghdad diminished Damascus’s imperial centrality.
Shukri al-Quwatli: A Syrian nationalist politician who served as president during the country’s transition to independence and in the 1950s. His presidencies mark the fragile parliamentary era before Syria’s union with Egypt.
United Arab Republic: A political union of Egypt and Syria that existed from 1958 to 1961. The union briefly suspended Syrian statehood and exposed tensions over centralized Arab unity.
Arameans: A Semitic-speaking people who established kingdoms across the Levant and Mesopotamia in the early first millennium BCE. Aramean kingdoms shaped Syria’s languages and political landscape before Assyrian conquest.
Crusades: A series of medieval religious wars in which Latin Christian armies sought control of territories in the eastern Mediterranean. Crusader states and campaigns contested Syrian lands with Muslim powers.
