History of Tamil Nadu

The history of the southern Indian region now called Tamil Nadu, from ancient Tamil societies through the formation and development of the modern state.

Sangam period: An early historic period in Tamilakam associated with Tamil poetry, chiefly polities, and trade, conventionally dated to the early centuries CE. Its poems and political traditions are central sources for early Tamil society.
Pandya dynasty: A Tamil dynasty that ruled parts of southern India from antiquity into the early modern period. Pandya rule links the Sangam-era kingdoms with later medieval political revivals.
Rajendra Chola I: A Chola emperor who ruled from 1014 to 1044 and led campaigns across South India and overseas. His reign marks the height of Chola imperial reach beyond the Tamil region.
Madras Presidency: A major administrative province of British India that included much of southern India and was governed from Madras. Its boundaries and institutions formed the colonial framework inherited at independence.

Pallava dynasty: A South Indian dynasty that ruled from Kanchipuram and influenced the region from roughly the fourth to ninth centuries. Pallava state-building and temple patronage reshaped northern Tamil country.
Robert Clive: A British East India Company officer whose military and political career helped expand Company power in India. His capture of Arcot in 1751 helped shift Carnatic conflicts toward Company influence.
Carnatic Wars: A series of eighteenth-century conflicts in southern India involving European trading companies and Indian powers. The wars established a pathway from commercial presence to British political dominance.
Tamil-Brahmi: An early script used to write Tamil, attested in inscriptions from the last centuries BCE onward. Its cave and pottery inscriptions provide direct evidence of early literacy and social life.
Chola dynasty: A Tamil dynasty whose imperial power peaked between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. Chola expansion created one of the region’s most consequential medieval states.
