History of Tanzania

The history of Tanzania traces the peoples, societies, and political changes of the territory that became the modern country, including mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Olduvai Gorge: A ravine in northern Tanzania whose archaeological layers preserve evidence of early hominins and stone-tool cultures. Its excavations place some of humanity’s earliest known ancestors in the territory.
German East Africa: A German colonial territory in East Africa from the 1880s until the First World War. It imposed colonial administration over much of mainland Tanzania.
Julius Nyerere: Tanzanian political leader who led Tanganyika to independence and served as Tanzania’s first president. His leadership defined independence, union, and the early republic.
Ujamaa: Tanzania’s policy of African socialism, emphasizing collective responsibility and rural communal development. It became the ideological framework for Nyerere’s post-independence development program.
Bantu expansion: The spread of Bantu-speaking communities across much of sub-Saharan Africa over several millennia. Bantu languages and farming communities transformed the region’s population and settlement.
Maji Maji Rebellion: An uprising against German rule in German East Africa from 1905 to 1907. It exposed the violence and limits of colonial rule on the mainland.
Abeid Karume: Zanzibari revolutionary leader who became the archipelago’s first president after the 1964 revolution. He negotiated Zanzibar’s union with Tanganyika alongside Nyerere.
Villagization in Tanzania: The relocation of rural Tanzanians into planned villages, especially during the 1970s. It was the main instrument for putting Ujamaa’s rural vision into practice.
Swahili coast: The East African coastline shaped by Swahili-speaking societies and centuries of Indian Ocean trade. Coastal towns connected communities in present-day Tanzania to wider maritime networks.
British Tanganyika: The League of Nations mandate and later United Nations trust territory administered by Britain after German rule. Its institutions and borders preceded mainland independence.
