History of telecommunication

The development of technologies and systems that transmit information over distance, from visual and electrical signaling to global digital networks.

Optical telegraph: A line-of-sight signaling system that relays messages through movable arms, shutters, or other visible states. Its relay towers carried coded messages across distances before electrical telegraphy.
Semaphore line: A chain of stations that relays messages using visible signals such as flags or mechanical arms. Semaphore lines established organized, long-distance message relays before electric networks.
Railway telegraphy: The use of telegraph systems to coordinate railway traffic and operations. Railways used rapid messaging to manage train movements and reduce collisions.
Time standardization: The adoption of coordinated clock times across regions or institutions. Telegraph networks enabled rapid time coordination, especially for railway schedules.
Postal system: An organized service for collecting, transporting, and delivering physical messages and parcels. It moved physical documents, while telecommunication transmitted signals without transporting the original message.
Electrical telegraph: A system that sends coded electrical signals through wires to communicate messages over distance. It replaced visual relays with fast signals carried along conductive wires.
Claude Chappe: A French inventor who developed a practical optical telegraph network in the late eighteenth century. His network demonstrated how state-run relay stations could transmit messages rapidly.
Telephony: The technology and practice of transmitting speech over distance by telephone. Telephone networks made direct voice conversation a routine long-distance service.
News agency: An organization that gathers and distributes news to newspapers, broadcasters, or other subscribers. Telegraphy let agencies collect and circulate reports across long distances much faster.
Telegraphy: The transmission of messages over distance using coded signals rather than physical delivery. Telegraphy sent discrete coded messages where telephony later carried speech continuously.
