History of the Balkans

The history of southeastern Europe centers on the Balkan Peninsula and its surrounding regions, where diverse peoples, states, and empires have interacted across centuries.

Ancient Greece: A civilization of city-states and kingdoms that flourished around the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. Greek colonies, kingdoms, and cultural influence shaped the peninsula’s southern and coastal histories.
Battle of Kosovo: A battle fought in 1389 between Ottoman forces and a coalition led by Serbian Prince Lazar. Its contested memory became influential in Serbian accounts of Ottoman conquest and national identity.
Stefan Dušan: A fourteenth-century Serbian ruler who expanded his realm and proclaimed himself emperor. His empire represents the height of medieval Serbian power in the peninsula.
Balkanism: A discourse that portrays the Balkans as Europe’s backward, violent, or unstable internal other. It exposes how external stereotypes have framed accounts of the peninsula’s past.

Skanderbeg: An Albanian nobleman who led a long resistance against Ottoman expansion in the fifteenth century. His campaigns became a landmark in the history and later memory of Albanian resistance.
Nationalism: A political principle that treats a nation as a basis for political identity and, often, statehood. National movements both challenged empires and generated competing territorial claims.
Albanian national awakening: A nineteenth-century movement for Albanian language, cultural recognition, and political autonomy. It helped establish a distinct national program amid Ottoman decline and neighboring claims.
