The history of the bicycle traces the evolution of two-wheeled human-powered vehicles, from early prototypes to modern designs and their social uses.

Draisine: An early two-wheeled, steerable vehicle propelled by its rider pushing against the ground. Karl von Drais’s 1817 machine established the bicycle’s basic two-wheel layout.
Chain drive: A mechanism that transfers rotary motion between sprockets using a linked chain. Rear-wheel chain transmission enabled a useful gear ratio without an oversized front wheel.
Bicycle boom: A surge in bicycle popularity and production during the late nineteenth century. Mass demand turned the safety bicycle into a major consumer product.
Road bicycle: A lightweight bicycle designed primarily for travel on paved roads. Road racing and distance riding favored narrow tires, low weight, and aerodynamic positions.
Walking: Human locomotion in which a person moves by stepping on foot. The bicycle increased travel speed and range while retaining human power.
Velocipede: A name for early human-powered vehicles, especially nineteenth-century bicycles with pedals attached to the front wheel. The pedal-driven velocipede marked a decisive step beyond foot-powered balance machines.
Pneumatic tire: A tire containing pressurized air that cushions impacts and reduces rolling resistance. Its adoption made bicycles markedly more comfortable and efficient on rough roads.
Women’s suffrage: The movement to secure voting rights for women. Bicycling expanded women’s independent mobility and became linked to debates over dress and freedom.
Mountain bike: A bicycle designed for riding on unpaved trails and rough terrain. Off-road cycling drove robust frames, wide tires, and specialized suspension.
Horse-drawn vehicle: A wheeled vehicle pulled by one or more horses. Bicycles offered personal transport without requiring an animal or carriage.
