History of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The history of the Central African territory and state now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo, from precolonial kingdoms through colonial rule, independence, and later conflicts.

Congo Free State: The personal colony of King Leopold II, administered from 1885 to 1908 and marked by coercive extraction and mass violence. Its forced-labor regime established the colonial order that Belgium later inherited.
Kingdom of Kongo: A Central African kingdom founded before European arrival, whose rulers governed lands around the lower Congo River. Its diplomacy with Portugal began a consequential, unequal relationship with Atlantic powers.
Patrice Lumumba: Congolese independence leader and the country’s first prime minister, killed in 1961 during the Congo Crisis. His brief premiership became central to disputes over national unity and foreign interference.
Congo Basin: The vast drainage basin of the Congo River, spanning Central African countries and dense tropical forests. Its resources and geography shaped colonial rule and remain central to the country’s economy.
Katanga secession: The attempted separation of mineral-rich Katanga from the Congo between 1960 and 1963. Its defeat did not settle tensions over regional autonomy and control of mineral wealth.
Belgian Congo: The Belgian colony established in 1908 from the Congo Free State and governed until independence in 1960. Its abrupt decolonization left few Congolese prepared for senior government or military roles.
Luba Empire: A Central African state whose political traditions and influence expanded across parts of the southern Congo Basin. Its institutions and oral traditions illuminate precolonial political life in the region.
Joseph Kasa-Vubu: Congolese politician who became the country’s first president after independence in 1960. His conflict with Lumumba defined the early constitutional struggle after independence.
Congo River: Africa’s second-longest river, flowing through the Congo Basin to the Atlantic Ocean. The river served as a major route for trade, colonial penetration, and transport.
M23 rebellion: An armed rebellion in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, notably active in 2012 and again from 2021. Its resurgence underscores how regional rivalries and weak state authority persist.
