History of the Netherlands

The history of the Netherlands traces the peoples and political institutions of the Low Countries, from prehistoric settlement through medieval rule, the Dutch Republic, and the modern kingdom.

Batavi: An ancient people who lived in the Rhine delta and served as allies of Rome. Their revolt against Rome became an enduring origin story for later Dutch identity.
Dutch Revolt: The rebellion of the Low Countries against Spanish Habsburg rule, beginning in the sixteenth century. It broke the Habsburg Netherlands apart and began the struggle for independence.
Dutch Golden Age: The seventeenth-century period of Dutch commercial power and major achievements in art, science, and culture. The Republic's wealth and political independence supported an exceptional flowering of urban culture.
Batavian Republic: A French-supported republic that replaced the Dutch Republic in 1795. It dismantled the old confederal order during the revolutionary era.
Eighty Years' War: The conflict from 1568 to 1648 in which the Low Countries rebelled against Spanish Habsburg rule. Its long course transformed provincial resistance into an independent republic.
Roman Netherlands: The parts of the present-day Netherlands incorporated into the Roman Empire, mainly south of the Rhine frontier. Roman rule brought military infrastructure and tied the southern region to imperial politics.
Union of Utrecht: A 1579 alliance of northern provinces that became the constitutional foundation of the Dutch Republic. It gave rebel provinces a framework for joint resistance and government.
Dutch East India Company: A chartered company founded in 1602 to conduct Dutch trade and exercise authority in Asia. Its trading empire made the Republic a global power while entangling it in colonial violence.
Kingdom of Holland: A Napoleonic kingdom established in 1806 and ruled by Louis Bonaparte. Its brief monarchy marked a shift from republican institutions under French pressure.
Treaty of Münster: The 1648 treaty that ended the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Dutch Republic. It formalized the political settlement that secured Dutch independence.
