The history of the telescope traces how instruments for collecting and focusing electromagnetic radiation developed from early optical devices into modern ground-based and space observatories.

Hans Lippershey: A Dutch spectacle maker who applied for a patent on a telescope in 1608. His patent application is the earliest documented claim for a telescope.
Chromatic aberration: Color fringing caused when a lens focuses different wavelengths at different distances. It limited early refractors and helped motivate reflective designs.
Sidereus Nuncius: Galileo’s 1610 pamphlet reporting telescopic observations of the Moon, stars, and Jupiter’s moons. Its publication carried the first major telescopic discoveries into public debate.
