History of Tibet

The history of Tibet traces the region’s changing states, Buddhist traditions, societies, and relations with neighboring powers from antiquity to the present.

Zhangzhung: An ancient polity in western Tibet, associated with the Bon tradition and later incorporated into the Tibetan Empire. Its incorporation extended early Tibetan power westward before the imperial period ended.
Era of Fragmentation: The period after the Tibetan Empire’s collapse, when regional rulers competed for power. The imperial collapse dispersed authority among local dynasties and religious centers.
Trisong Detsen: An eighth-century Tibetan emperor who supported Buddhism and sponsored the establishment of Samye Monastery. His patronage helped establish Buddhism as an imperial religious tradition.
Tibetan independence movement: Political advocacy for Tibet to become an independent state, distinct from the People’s Republic of China. It expresses the independence claim that differs from China’s account of Tibetan sovereignty.
Chinese annexation of Tibet: The incorporation of Tibet into the People’s Republic of China through military and political measures beginning in 1950. It ended the period of de facto independence and brought Tibet under Chinese administration.
Tibetan Empire: A Central Asian empire ruled by Tibetan dynasties from the seventh to ninth centuries. It unified much of Tibet and projected power into Central Asia and China.
Sakya: A Tibetan Buddhist school and monastic institution that held political authority under Mongol patronage in the thirteenth century. Sakya lamas governed Tibet through an alliance with the Mongol Yuan dynasty.
Padmasambhava: An Indian Buddhist tantric master associated with the early transmission of Buddhism to Tibet. Tibetan tradition credits him with helping establish Buddhism during the imperial era.
Tibet Autonomous Region: A provincial-level administrative region of the People’s Republic of China established in 1965. Its official administrative status contrasts with claims that Tibet should be sovereign.
Seventeen Point Agreement: The 1951 agreement between Tibetan representatives and the People’s Republic of China concerning Tibet’s status and governance. Its disputed terms became central to accounts of how Chinese rule was established.
