History of Transnistria

The history of the territory along the Dniester River, shaped by shifting empires, diverse populations, Soviet rule, and the unresolved conflict between Moldova and the self-proclaimed Transnistrian state.

Dacians: An ancient people who inhabited parts of the lower Danube and Carpathian regions. Ancient communities in the wider region preceded the empires that later governed the Dniester lands.
Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic: A Soviet autonomous republic established in 1924 within the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, east of the Dniester. Its territory became the core of the later Transnistrian political project.
Igor Smirnov: A Soviet-born politician who led Transnistria's de facto administration from 1991 to 2011. His long tenure shaped the institutions and identity of the breakaway region.

Principality of Moldavia: A medieval and early modern principality centered in the lands of present-day Moldova and Romania. Its eastern frontier and political history help explain later claims to territory west of the Dniester.
Moldovan language law of 1989: A Moldovan law that made the Romanian language written in the Latin alphabet the republic's official language. Language policy intensified opposition among parts of the Russian-speaking population east of the river.
