History of Tunisia

The history of Tunisia traces societies and states in the region from ancient Carthage and Roman rule through Arab-Muslim dynasties, Ottoman and French rule, and independence in 1956.

Carthage: An ancient Phoenician-founded city-state in North Africa that became a major Mediterranean power. Its rise and destruction frame Tunisia’s best-known ancient history.
Arab conquest of the Maghreb: The seventh- and eighth-century expansion of Arab-Muslim rule across North Africa. It established the political and religious setting for medieval Ifriqiya.
Hannibal: A Carthaginian general who led an invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War. His campaigns embody Carthage’s struggle against Roman expansion.

Roman Africa: A Roman province centered on former Carthaginian territory in North Africa. Roman administration, cities, and agriculture reshaped the region.
Aghlabid dynasty: An Arab Muslim dynasty that ruled Ifriqiya from 800 to 909. Its rule made Kairouan a major center and extended influence across the Mediterranean.
