The history of the lands and peoples of Ukraine, from ancient societies and medieval states through the emergence and development of modern Ukraine.

Kyivan Rus’: A medieval East Slavic polity centered on Kyiv, influential from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Its Kyiv-centered legacy became a major source of competing Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian historical narratives.
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A federal state formed in 1569 by the union of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its rule over Ukrainian lands shaped social, religious, and political conflict in the early modern period.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky: A Cossack hetman who led the 1648 uprising against Polish rule and established the Cossack Hetmanate. His revolt altered the political balance across Ukrainian lands and neighboring states.
Russian historiography: The study and writing of history shaped by Russian scholarly traditions and political contexts. Its narratives have often treated Ukrainian history as inseparable from, or subordinate to, Russian history.
Cossack Hetmanate: A Cossack polity that governed parts of central Ukraine from the mid-seventeenth century into the eighteenth century. Its traditions of self-government became lasting reference points for Ukrainian political identity.
Russian Empire: A Eurasian empire ruled by the Romanov dynasty from 1721 until its collapse in 1917. It governed much of Ukraine and imposed policies that constrained Ukrainian language and political organization.
Ivan Mazepa: A Cossack hetman who ruled the Hetmanate from 1687 to 1709 and allied with Sweden against Peter I. His failed bid to escape Russian control became a lasting symbol of autonomy and betrayal.
Ukrainian national revival: The nineteenth-century growth of Ukrainian cultural, linguistic, and political consciousness. It challenged imperial claims that Ukrainians formed merely a regional branch of another nation.
Partitions of Poland: The late-eighteenth-century divisions that ended the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and transferred its lands to neighboring powers. They placed most Ukrainian lands under the Russian and Habsburg empires.
Habsburg monarchy: The composite Central European monarchy ruled by the Habsburg dynasty until 1918. Its western Ukrainian territories developed under different institutions from those in the Russian Empire.
