History of Utah

The history of Utah encompasses Indigenous societies, European exploration, Mormon settlement, territorial rule, statehood, and subsequent social and economic change.

Ancient Puebloans: Ancestral Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest who built settled communities and cultivated crops. Their archaeological sites document centuries of life in what is now Utah before European arrival.
Mormon settlement in Utah: The establishment of Latter-day Saint communities across the Great Basin beginning in 1847. Colonies organized around irrigation and church authority shaped Utah’s early towns and institutions.
First Transcontinental Railroad: The rail line completed across the United States in 1869, linking the eastern network with the Pacific coast. Its completion at Promontory Summit connected Utah to national markets and migration routes.

Mining in Utah: The extraction of metals and minerals that became a major part of Utah’s economy from the nineteenth century onward. Mining towns and industries diversified an economy once dominated by agriculture and church settlements.
Mountain Meadows Massacre: The 1857 killing of emigrants by a group of local militia members and Paiute participants in southern Utah. The massacre remains a defining tragedy in the history of Mormon settlement and memory.
Ute people: An Indigenous people of the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau, with historic homelands across much of present-day Utah and Colorado. Their presence and sovereignty long predate Utah’s territorial and state governments.
Utah Territory: A federal territory established in 1850, encompassing lands later divided among several western states. Territorial government brought Utah under federal administration while local leaders sought greater autonomy.
